What is Plaque?

This sticky biofilm that develops on the teeth due to bacterias attacking the remaining food particles in the mouth is called plaque. When plaque remains on the teeth for a long time because of bad oral hygiene, it begins to affect oral health in a grave manner.

What is tartar?

If plaque is left uncleaned it hardens and becomes calcified and is called calculus which further contributes to tooth decay and gum diseases. Plaque may still be cleaned with proper brushing/cleaning and a vigilant oral hygiene. Whereas, tartar or calculus needs to be cleaned professionally by a dentist or dental hygienist only because of its rigid nature.

Why is teeth and gum cleaning important for gums?

If and when plaque and tartar builds up exorbitantly on the teeth, it may get below the gum line which is when the oral health issue accelerates. In this position, the regular brushing and flossing won't reach the buildup so it is significant to get a professional cleaning done. If left untreated this biofilm possesses a threat to oral health by adding to decay problems, swelling of gums, bleeding gums, bad breath, receding of gums and eventually leading to detaching and loosening of teeth and falling out.

The germs may also enter the bloodstream and can cause infection in other parts of the body including the heart. Endocarditis is a serious cardiac infection that is prevalent due to bad oral health and may also be fatal.

What are the types of gum treatments and cleanings?

There are majorly three types of cleaning that are done by skilled dentists:

Professional dental cleaning - This type of cleaning is done professionally by your oral hygienist or dentist when the level of build-up has increased and calcified. The buildup is scraped away slowly with an Ultrasonic Scaler instrument and a fluoride treatment follows to give you some extra shielding from cavities. Your dentist will also suggest professional cleaning more than once a year if they see signs of gum diseases like gingivitis, periodontitis, decay etc.

Subgingival scaling and root planing - Deep teeth cleaning which is also called gum therapy or gum scaling and root planing, is a dental treatment designed to clean between the teeth and gums below the gum line. It is a non-surgical procedure and is done under local anaesthesia. This cleaning is carried out from the gum line to below the gum line. Even smoothing of the rough surfaces of the roots for easement of reattachment of the gums to the teeth.

Curettage is the 3rd type of cleaning where the necrotic or inflamed gums are removed with the help of special curettes and helps in debridement of inflammatory substances and tissue from the gums and trimmed to form the reattachment to the roots through periodontal ligaments.

Medication - Though there is no magic medicine that may immediately get rid of the gum problems, your dentist may still prescribe you antibiotics, antiseptics, enzyme suppressants etc, as a part of your gum treatment.
